A Farkeled Day

Today started out so well! We felt a bit like we were working on a chain gang as we made an assembly line to try and remove the huge pile of rocks from the path of the next driveway.

By lunchtime we had cleared about half the rocks from the pile, and the guys had nearly completed the cement mixing, hauling, and pouring for the first driveway. We were feeling good as we sipped our fabulous coffee and fresh squeezed strawberry juice... but the weather had another idea. As we sat to lunch, the sky opened and down poured buckets upon buckets of rain on our freshly poured concrete. Fortunately, Rafael got a plastic tarp over it before the work was ruined, but  then we had to wait for the rain to stop.

Noon turned into 1pm, and 1pm turned into 2pm, then 3pm, and the rain had let up but was still sprinkling. Feeling a bit frustrated by the inability to do anything (and also slightly grateful for the break), a few of us set into an intense game of Farkel. It's a dice game requiring a lot of luck and a little strategy, and as we've discovered over the past few days, it can become quite addicting.

About 3:30pm, the rain finally stopped but left everything way too wet to actually do anything... or so we thought. We decided to walk down to the site to collect our tools and call it a day, but as we neared the casitas, we could hear the cement mixer turning. Rafael had apparently decided that it wasn't too wet to finish pouring the slab, and he wasn't about to wait on a bunch of gringos to finish the job! So we grabbed our gloves and helped him finish the last bit of driveway. It felt good to be able to finish at least one thing we had started today! The rocks were way too wet and slippery to safely climb up and pass them down, as some of them weighed well over 50 lbs., but at least we made progress.
