First Day's Labor

The internet here went down yesterday, so we weren't able to blog about our day, but here's an attempt to catch up:

We started the day kind of slow as we had to wait for certain people to arrive. The 2 meant that are normally here to assist teams with the construction are both gone this week, so another contractor named Rafael has been helping us out. The tasks that will probably take us the entire week consist of finishing off the concrete driveway of one of the casitas and pouring the last two driveways in the final casitas. There are a total of 4 casitas in this first phase of the greater project, and the structures of all 4 are mostly complete (minus doors, windows, electricity, plumbing, etc.). What would typically seem to be a fairly simple task, is certainly not so simple here. Without heavy equipment or a nice ready-mix truck, things become a bit more involved. For the first day, Eben, Loren, and Rafael cut wires for the framing of the driveway and laid the rebar to the first driveway so it could be poured first thing the next morning.

So, while the guys attacked the completion of one driveway and the set-up for another, the gals decided to get a head-start on clearing the area where the last driveway was supposed to be. In somebody's infinite wisdom, they had created a huge wood pile full of rusty nails, and a mountain of large rocks for the septic system right where we need to pour the final slab. We started with one section of the wood pile that was about 10 feet by 10 feet, and taller than us, and one piece at a time we removed the nails and hauled them all up to the top of the hill above the casitas where they truly be out of the way. It took us the entire day just to get that one section de-nailed and cleared. We had to laugh as one of the neighbors stuck his head out at one point and asked how the work was coming, and Becky responded, "Well, the men always seem to make these huge messes and then leave them for the women to clean up!"

Dot, sorting through the wood. We're halfway through the first pile!!

Best wire-cutters ever!!
